How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Day Scent

The right wedding-day scent will set the mood for one of the most memorable occasions of your life. And so we asked a panel of experts what brides-to-be should consider when picking their fragrance to wear down the aisle.

A scent creates an emotional experience. It’s a way of expressing who you are and who you want to be. So when choosing a fragrance for your wedding, start with how you want to feel and what you want to express on your special day.

If you want to feel feminine and romantic, pick a subtle composition of woody notes and floral bouquets. If you want to express glamour, then look to a classic chypre fragrance. Or if you want to convey sensuality, look for warm spices, Oriental ingredients, musk and sweet blossoms.

The Perfumer, Vincent Schaller
“As the wedding is the most important day of your life, I recommend wearing a fragrance that is elegant; one that makes you feel confident and that will linger for hours.

I put the white rose at the heart of Volare Forever because of its long-standing association with the wedding and romance. I knew in an instant that I wanted to connect this scent with the wedding theme – after all “forever” equates to eternal love, and to me that has to be the wedding. A bride’s fragrance should sparkle – a beautiful ray of light, for the most beautiful day of your life.”

Choosing your wedding day scent should be as an important part of your wedding ritual, as choosing the dress. When selecting your perfume, there are two approaches you can take: one is to wear your signature scent (if you have one), a familiar fragrance that will offer warmth and security to you both during the celebration.

Alternatively, you could carefully select a new fragrance that you wear on your wedding day and on future anniversaries. That way, the scent will forever be associated with your special day and bring back the memories of it. If you do this, take time to find your scent – and include your partner; I love the intimacy of shopping for perfume with my boyfriend.

Founder of Bride Book and Groom-to-be, Hamish Shephard
"It can be really fun to pick out a unique fragrance with your ceremony in mind. Try to incorporate things that you think are important for the day in terms of theme, style and the season your wedding is booked for.

A warmer scent with ingredients such as amber and chocolate may feel too heavy and rich for a summer wedding but feel decadent when reserved for a winter ceremony! Likewise, a classic perfume made up of staples like jasmine or rose might be perfect for a traditional ceremony at a historic venue but not feel quite right when paired with a laidback beach wedding.”

The Bride, Daniela Bonardi
"Since a wedding is pretty nerve-wrecking, I chose to wear my usual scent on my big day – I wanted to feel calm and comfortable. My tip for brides is to wear something you are at ease in. You’ll notice that on your wedding day, every scent becomes heightened and more intense, so you’ll want something you can rely on. Plus, this way, you’ll be reminded of your wedding every day.”
