Why your skin looks dull and how to make it glow

How is it that some people just have glowing skin while some of us have to deal with skin duller than a Monday morning? We decided to look into the causes of a dull skin tone and find out what you need for that desirable lit-from-within glow.

What causes dull skin?
Whether your skin looks dull or glowing depends on your skin’s translucency, meaning how your skin looks when it’s exposed to light. The outer layer of the skin on its own is clear and colourless, and can appear more or less translucent depending on the state of the skin’s structure and surface. This means that if the top layer of your skin is unhealthy it won’t reflect light, which can leave you with an ashy complexion.

So, what affects the skin’s translucency?
Is your moisturiser hydrating enough? Or maybe your skin has been exposed to biting cold or scorching sun? We can mainly blame our lack of glow on dry skin or an impaired skin barrier. When the skin is dry the skin structure can become uneven, meaning the surface becomes rougher and scatters light instead of reflecting it making the skin look dull. An uneven skin surface can also be caused by dead skin cells, wrinkles or fine lines.

How to get glowing skin
Luckily, all of the above issues can be quite easily improved with the right care. It all comes back to the right ingredients and being diligent with your skin care routine.

Hyaluronic acid serum
First of all, add moisture, moisture, moisture! If glowing skin is your priority, we suggest adding a hyaluronic acid serum to your bathroom cabinet. Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet that soaks your skin with sumptuous hydration. Our NovAge Brilliance Serum for example, contains small-sized hyaluronic acid molecules that are able to penetrate deeper into the epidermis to intensely hydrate, improve translucency, skin tone and texture. There, aptly combined with expert ratios of other water-holding molecules, it can act as an irrigating, moisture-delivery system. When the upper layer of the skin is hydrated it has a sleeker surface that is way better at reflecting light – hello glow!

Exfoliate the skin
Do you exfoliate a few times a week? If not, doing this a few times a week can give your skin a real glow up! Getting rid of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface improves uneven skin and enhances the skin’s ability to absorb your serum and moisturiser, meaning you’ll get the most out of your hyaluronic acid serum.

With these small adjustments to your routine, you can go from dull to glowing in no-time!
