5 Sustainable Beauty Trends to Know

In recent years we’ve seen a gradual increase in sustainable practices in the beauty industry, but 2019 looks set to be a year of even greater change. At Oriflame, it’s important to us to keep up with these sustainable trends so we can deliver the absolute highest quality for you, as well as the planet! Here are the five sustainable beauty trends to look out for this year:

1. Biodegradable Ingredients
So we’ve tackled microbeads and face wipes, but in 2019 we can expect to see much more from players in the beauty field. We’re realising the importance of the sustainability of all parts of our products, from what they contain to what they’re packaged in.

Beauty companies are now looking more closely at the ingredients they use in their products, and making sure that they take care of the planet, as well as us. If you’re looking to make a positive change for the environment, why not try our Love Nature and Discover rinse products, which contain only biodegradable ingredients?

2. Sustainable Packaging
As consumers become more ardent defenders of the planet, companies will strive to meet sustainable demands by using even less plastic, in some cases replacing it with plastic recovered from the ocean. For example, here at Oriflame we’re increasing our use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic – in 2018, instead of using petroleum-based plastic, we used a total of 100 tonnes of PCR plastic in our production! Many other companies, if they aren’t already doing so, will be starting to invest in and develop their own recyclable and/or recycled packaging.

3. Refillable Products
We’ve seen a little of this recently, but there’s definitely room for improvement. More companies will be jumping on the bandwagon with this sustainable refillable trend in 2019 as it becomes more popular with consumers. Rather than selling the same packaged products over and over to repeat buyers, companies are now starting to sell refillable products – all you need to do is keep your original dispenser, be it lipstick, moisturiser or foundation, and top it up when you run out! If you’re considering a new refillable alternative to your own products, try out refillable The ONE Make-up Pro Palette, which you can customise to your own taste and complexion with replaceable matte and pearl shades!

4. Mobile Apps
It’s very likely that in 2019 there will be an upsurge in apps that survey and rate beauty products based on ethical, green criteria. Mobile apps can also reduce or even negate the need for paper – the popular Oriflame app gives you access to catalogue and favourite products any time you need!

5. Renewable Energy Use
We’ll also begin to see a difference in the way that beauty brands are manufacturing their products. Some companies are already incorporating renewable energy sources, such as wind power, into their manufacturing processes. This is a trend that we expect to become more common in the beauty industry as we progress into 2019.

Here at Oriflame, it gives us joy to work in an office that is 100% powered by renewable electricity – this goes for our warehouses and factories too! Fingers crossed that we see more of this across the beauty industry in the year to come!
