What is oxidative stress?

We are all exposed to free radicals every day, from natural metabolic processes within our own bodies, but also from unhealthy lifestyle choices (e.g., unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption and smoking) and from the environment (e.g., pollution and UV rays). Our body has a natural built-in antioxidant defence system but if these defences are unable to keep up with neutralising the accumulation of free radicals, it puts stress on our bodies – known as oxidative stress – which can have a negative impact over time. Oxidative stress can occur in every organ in our bodies, including our skin, brain, heart, and eyes. You need a variety of antioxidants from your diet to help your body protect itself against oxidative stress.

  • Over time, oxidative stress can lead to negative health effects (Pisoschi & Pop, 2015).
  • Oxidative stress can lead to skin ageing, eye damage and impaired immunity (Pisoschi & Pop, 2015)
  • Immune cells are particularly sensitive to oxidative stress. Research has shown that astaxanthin can benefit the immune system (Park et al. 2010, Baralic et al. 2015).

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are compounds, which are able to neutralise free radicals. There are many types of antioxidants, present in different types of foods, including phytonutrients (natural plant compounds), vitamins and minerals. Including a variety of different coloured plant-based foods in your diet means you will get different types of antioxidants with different benefits.

  • Antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress, benefiting skin health, eye health and immune function (Pisoschi & Pop, 2015).

  • Natural Astaxanthin - a carotenoid extracted from microalgae commonly found in the Stockholm archipelago
  • Bilberry – a berry found in Swedish forests, rich in anthocyanins
  • Vitamin C – a water-soluble vitamin
  • Vitamin E – a fat-soluble vitamin

Astaxanthin:

Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid sourced from the microalgae H. pluvialis, native to the Stockholm archipelago. Its efficacy is backed by over 60 human clinical trials (Stachowiak & Szulc, 2021).

  • Astaxanthin is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants (Nishida et al., 2007), and is abundant in microalgae common to the Stockholm archipelago.

  • The antioxidant benefits of natural Astaxanthin:

4.9X more powerful than beta-carotene! (Nishida et al., 2007)

90X more powerful than synthetic Astaxanthin! (Régnier et al., 2015)

110X more powerful than Vitamin E! (Nishida et al., 2007)
