This is the order you should be applying your makeup

What actually comes first; concealer or foundation? Eye makeup or blusher? The makeup order can be a tricky situation to figure out. Let’s settle this once and for all with a step-by-step guide

Step 1: Skincare of course

This is not makeup per se, but we thought it’s best to mention that your skincare routine always comes first. A well-prepped face, that has been cleaned, moisturised, primed and UV-protected is essential when you want to create a makeup look that lasts – no matter what the day throws at you.

Step 2: Brows and eyes

That this is the first makeup step might come as a complete surprise but bear with us, there are some good reasons for applying your eye makeup and eyebrows before adding your base. The first is that it’s easier to clean up any smudges or fallouts if your skin is clear from foundation. Secondly, doing your eyes and brows first can also give your face the time it needs to absorb the skincare products properly. This in turn gives you an even better chance of creating a makeup look that will stay on all day.

Step 3: Foundation

Once your eye makeup and eyebrows are done, it’s time to apply foundation. It’s important to choose the foundation that best suits your skin type. As an example, for oily skin we’d recommend a mattifying foundation, for dry skin you should go for a hydrating foundation, and for normal skin you can try a skincare-infused foundation, or why not a BB or CC cream. Apply your product of choice with your fingers, a brush, or a sponge.

Step 4: Concealer

The best thing to do is to wait to add a concealer until after you’ve finished applying the foundation. The foundation will give you an overall even coverage and then you just use the concealer to top up underneath the eye or by the nose. A concealer is also a great product to use if you’d like to reduce the appearance of any stubborn blemishes and dark spots.

Step 5: Highlighter, blusher, and bronzer

Add a pop of colour to your cheeks with a blusher, some shimmer to the high points of your face with a highlighter, and a bit of contouring with a bronzer – or better yet, try serum infused pearls that blush, bronze and highlight all at once! A tip is to add these products when the skin is still a little bit moist from the primer and foundation, because this will make them set even better.

Step 6: Lips

The makeup product that often wears out first is the lipstick or lip gloss, so that’s why we add these in the end.

Step 7: Powder and setting spray

To further ensure that the beautiful look you just created stays on, you need to add a powder or setting spray (you can of course use both if you like). Use the powder only in the places of the face that you want to protect from shine, like the temples, side of the nose, and chin. If you choose to use a setting spray instead, hold the bottle 15 cm from your face and spray in an X formation, followed by a T formation, covering all the products you've just applied. Once that step is complete, your makeup is all set and done.
