The Expert's Guide to Protein

You don't have to be a fitness freak to know that protein is important for your body. But why is it so important and how much do you need every day? To get an expert's input we sat down with our Global Wellness Scientist, Dr Elisabet Nordström. This is her guide to protein.

1. WHY DO OUR BODIES NEED PROTEIN?
Proteins are an essential part of the billions of cells that our bodies create every day. By supplying amino acids (your body’s fundamental building blocks) proteins help your body to perform a vast number of functions – from repairing tissue to creating enzymes.

2. HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO OUR BODIES NEED EVERY DAY?
The recommended daily dose is about 0.8-1g of protein per 1 kilo of body weight. That is about 56g for a man weighing 70 kilos and 46g for a woman weighing 60 kilos. But if you are an athlete the recommendation is higher and may exceed 2g per 1 kilo body weight.

3. TELL US ABOUT THE WELLNESS BY ORIFLAME PROTEIN BLEND?
Protein Blend is Professor Stig Steen’s original formula, developed to support the nutritional needs of his critically ill patients before and after surgery. Created using his unique, high-quality blend of protein sources and dietary fibre, it’s the perfect solution to enhance your daily nutrition.

4. WHAT MAKES PROTEIN BLEND UNIQUE?
The unique thing about Protein Blend is that it combines three different protein sources: pea protein, whey protein from milk and protein from egg. Together they deliver an amino acid composition that supports your body’s ability to create new proteins and cells in the best possible way. Protein Blend also delivers high-quality nutrition from ingredients providing slow release carbohydrates, fats, and fibre.

5. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS?
the pea protein is naturally-sourced, free from common allergens and without cholesterol or lactose. Whey protein has a complete amino acid profile and is absorbed fast. Egg was chosen due to its very high biological value and because it is an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals. To make it a complete formula, Protein Blend also includes ingredients that provide dietary fibre: apple, rosehip and sugar beet. Apple and rosehip are naturally rich in vitamin C, which is important for maintaining a healthy-functioning immune system.

6. TELL US MORE ABOUT DIETARY FIBRE – WHY IS THAT GOOD?
According to Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, and other international guidelines, a daily intake of at least 25-35 grams of dietary fibre is beneficial to your health. It has been reported that most people fall short of this recommendation. Therefore, it is great to add a product like Protein Blend to your daily diet, as it provides fibre in an easy way.

7. WHAT FOODS CAN PROTEIN BLEND BE MIXED INTO?
Protein Blend can be added to a wide range of foods and beverages – either during cooking/baking process, or by mixing it in at the table. Because it is unflavoured, and has no added sugar or sweetener, there are so many ways to harness its benefits while still enjoying the flavours you love.
