For many Swedes, a glass of homemade blackcurrant cordial is an instant throwback to childhood summers in the sun. In fact, the whole plant is a wonderfully versatile beauty ingredient, with the leaves, bark, fruit and seed oil all boasting valuable properties. Blackcurrant seed oil in particular, is rich in essential fatty acids that help to moisturise and condition skin and hair.  

Also known as buckeye, the horse chestnut tree is a member of the Hippocastanaceae family, with large, showy pink or white flowers. Not to be confused with the edible Castanea chestnut, horse chestnut fruits are inedible and poisonous, but their seeds, leaves and bark have many valuable properties and have been used in traditional medicine for many years. In beauty, horse chestnut’s seed extract has many applications and is a good astringent and antioxidant, widely used in hair care and personal care products.  

The hardy redcurrant shrub thrives in colder climates like Sweden’s, yielding ruby red fruits that are often enjoyed as a refreshing cordial drink. The tangy fruits are a nutritional powerhouse, boasting high levels of minerals and vitamins A, B1, B2 and K and packed with vitamin C and carotenoids, both of which provide antioxidant benefits to the skin. Redcurrants’ high fruit acid content also makes them a wonderfully toning skin care ingredient.  

The silver birch tree is close to our Swedish hearts. Not only because the slender silvery trunks are characteristic of our Nordic landscape, but because it was one of the first natural ingredients that inspired us when we founded Oriflame, over 50 years ago. Back then, we were one of the first cosmetic companies inspired by natural ingredients and today, we continue to value silver birch’s properties. The birch sap water, leaf extract and bark extract are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, sugars and amino acids, making them excellent beauty ingredients.
