Ingredient Spotlight: Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Looking for a skin care ingredient that unclogs, minimises spots and makes your skin silky smooth? You’ve found it! Here’s all you need to know about this trusty blemish-fighter.

What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) and a chemical exfoliant mostly known for its blemish-fighting benefits. If you have blemishes, oily skin or clogged pores or dealt with teenage acne, it’s very likely that you have come across salicylic acid at some point. Its well-known for its exceptional ability to unclog pores and features in many anti-acne products (for adults too!) for that very reason. But salicylic acid has more tricks up its sleeve! It has become a real crowd pleaser for its exfoliating and smoothing qualities and is a staple in every skin care junkies’ routine.

What does salicylic acid do for the skin?
• Exfoliates and decongests the skin
• Clears pores of oil, dirt and dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores
• Smooths rough and uneven skin
• Brightens the skin
• Helps prevent new blemishes, blackheads or whiteheads from forming
• Calms the skin

How does salicylic acid work?
Salicylic acid, like many other acids, exfoliate the skin by weakening the bonds between dead skin cells so that they can be shed evenly, and promoting cell turnover. This helps to brighten the skin and give you a smooth and glowy look. However, unlike some other acids like AHAs, salicylic acid is oil soluble which means it also penetrates into the pores and exfoliates from the inside to clean out dirt, oil and skin cells to prevent clogging that could cause spots to develop, which is what makes it such an excellent blemish-fighting ingredient.
